A tape is arranged away from the site of disturbance. Samples are then taken at intervals along the tape. This sampling method is called an interrupted belt transect.

Soil samples may be taken to test its pH, water content, humus content and texture. The slope along the transect may be measured using a clinometer as in the picture.

Biological data might be collected by placing a quadrat frame at intervals and then measuring the cover or abundance of organisms.
