Marram grass leaves are rolled so that the stomata are protected inside a cylinder. The stomata are in pits and are surrounded by hairs to further decrease water loss. The leaves' upper surface has a thick waxy cuticle. The plants roots can be 15 to 20 metres long.

Marram plants can colonise unstable sand using underground creeping stems that push through the sand. |
