Chiton

Maximum length: 3 cm.
Appearance: It has eight plates making up a flattened shell.
Depth: Lower shore and in shallows at the edge of the sea.
Feeding: Chitons are primary consumers. They are herbivores, grazing on algae on rocks using a hardened tooth called a radula.
Environment: Chitons move around on rocks and then shelter under stones as the tide goes out. They cannot survive out of water.
Other facts: Chitons are very simple relatives of snails. They have no tentacles, eyes or jaws.
Classification: Chitons are invertebrate animals. They are members of the mollusc group.
