Butterfish - Pholis gunnellus

Maximum length: 25 cm.
Appearance: It has a long body, flattened from side to side. The fin on its back goes along its body. There are black spots along the back. Its skin is very slimy.
Depth: Lower shore and below the low tide level.
Feeding: The butterfish is a secondary  consumer. It feeds on worms and small crustaceans.
Environment: Butterfish lives in the sea but is sometimes found in rockpools but usually on the lower shore near the sea because it cannot survive high temperatures.
Other facts: Butterfish are very hard to catch, which is how they get their name. The male fish guards its eggs.
Classification: Butterfish is a vertebrate animal. It is a member of the fish group.
