Maximum length: 5 cm Appearance: Bright red body with red tentacles. The base is attached to a rocky bottom. The tentacles may contract into the centre to hide and protect them. Depth: Middle to lower shore. Feeding: The beadlet is a secondary consumer. It is carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates. The tentacles have stinging cells that attach to its prey. You can feel the stinging cells if you gently touch the tentacles with a finger, they feel sticky as the stinging cells attach to your skin. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt! Environment: The beadlet anemone lives in rock pools on the shore and in the shallower part of the sea below low tide level. Other facts: Beadlets are thought to reproduce asexually forming a colony. The members of a colony attack intruders. Classification: Beadlets are members of the animal kingdom. They are related to jellyfish. |
