Six facts about the light dependent reaction

go back to linking page
  • Chlorophyll and associated electron carriers are held on thylakoid membranes.

  • There are two forms of chlorophyll (I and II).

  • Light excites electrons in chlorophyll which then leave the molecule.

  • Electrons pass back to chlorophyll II from water. This is called photolysis It generates oxygen gas and hydrogen ions.

  • Electrons pass to chlorophyll I from chlorophyll II through electron carriers. This generates ATP.

  • The electrons from chlorophyll I and hydrogen ions from water reduce NADP.
